► Background

M.A.D - Otherwise known as Mutually Assured Destruction. Was created by the Arena, constructed based on blueprints found in competitor Gorty's room. There was a note attached to these plans, saying that something like this should only be used in the event that "something should go horribly wrong" and or if he specifically "went missing". The Arena has no clue what this could possibly mean, so the note was discarded, and M.A.D was constructed anyway for use in the Boss Gauntlet. It would seem that while Gorty created these plans, he ultimately must have lacked the technical skill to create such things, given his greater focus in biological science. The "recipe" for M.A.D consisted of condensing "as many tons of explosives as possible into one being". So the Arena went ahead and compressed 1,000,000,000 tons of individual nuclear bombs themselves, into a single core that when ignited, explodes with greater force than has ever been known before now. The reason for why such a thing would need to be created, and by this competitor of all individuals is beyond our understanding.

Alongside M.A.D comes a set of military equipment that was called for as well. Including a large bomber plane, a second smaller explosive packed being named C4, as well as an entire army of soldiers. All of these, including a bunker busting section are utilized to great effect to create a gauntlet within M.A.D's boss fight itself just to get to her. C4 in particular had plans next to M.A.D which also had a note upon them saying "In case anything happens to M.A.D". But this note was also ignored. We simply spared no expense to ensure that something like this could be put to such a great use!

M.A.D is a sentient being, she was programmed to socially portray herself as female. However, with her sentience and knowledge bank installed within her she has personally felt as though identity exists beyond gender. She is fine being referred to as pretty much anything, as what people call her is not something she cares about. What M.A.D does care about is her prime directive. She however will not tell us what that directive is. Telling us that information is gated behind some kind of verbal passcode that only Gorty would know. When asking C4 similar questions, all he can tell us is that he wants nothing more than to explode. His biggest worry is being deactivated without the chance to also achieve his main goal which is to blow up, and then as he puts it, act like he doesn't know nobody. Regardless, neither C4 nor M.A.D seem super sociable with the others. Most are deathly afraid to be near them out of fear of instant vaporization. So they don't tend to roam far from their boss chamber.

M.A.D begins a 5 minute timer when the boss fight starts. The team has that much time to make it through all 4 stages to win. Should the team fail to defeat M.A.D in 5 minutes, everything will be obliterated.

Stage 1 — Bunker Busting
Boss Phase (DETHCON 4)

Each member of the team begins in their own area, separated from their teammates. Each area contains a turret that cannot be damaged and fires once every 1.2 seconds at their respective target, dealing 1 damage per hit. The objective is for each teammate to break into the bunker below by busting through a series of increasingly stronger metal walls:

Bronze — 50 HP • Silver — 100 HP • Gold — 150 HP • Platinum — 200 HP • Diamond — 250 HP

Once a combatant breaks through the final layer, they wait at the bottom while still being fired upon. Only after all three reach the bottom does the team advance.

Intermission — Bombing Run: A large plane flies from right to left dropping 20 damage bombs once per second. A small member of Shaw's family of healers rushes in to help, healing 4 HP per collision — but has exactly 20 HP. Once the plane crosses, the next stage begins. Each subsequent intermission, the plane crosses from the opposite direction.

Stage 2 — Bomb Defusal
Boss Phase (DETHCON 3)

C4, M.A.D's "younger brother", enters with his own ten minute timer. He does not attack, but each point of damage he takes reduces his timer by 1 second, bringing him closer to detonation. To disarm C4, teams must collect seven defusal code pieces that spawn at set intervals, each spawning shortly after the last is input. A team member collects a piece and hits C4 to input it. Once all 7 are input, C4 is disarmed and leaves in a huff.

Should C4 not be disarmed in time, he will explode, leaving all living team members at 1 HP. Either way, if at least one member survives, the next intermission and Stage 3 begin.

Stage 3 — The Army
Boss Phase (DETHCON 2)

The trio faces an army of fifty small, mobile army units. Each functions like the turrets but can move freely. Each unit has 5 HP. Survive the ambush to proceed to the final intermission bombing run, then the last stage.

Stage 4 — M.A.D
Boss Phase (DETHCON 1)

M.A.D finally makes her appearance. The time remaining on the overall clock is how long the team has to defeat her. She has 1,000 HP and does not deal damage directly, instead using four turrets, one in each corner of the arena, to fire on the trio at intervals, slowly chipping away at them.

Three possible outcomes:
VictoryM.A.D is defeated and the explosion is averted. The team advances to the next floor.
Defeat — The team loses all lives or all members are eliminated at once.
Detonation — The primary timer expires. M.A.D detonates, utterly obliterating everything.
