As a young girl, Gilhene had always been picked on for what they said was her ridiculous name. It would not take long for her to run away from the very place she called home due to her own parents' apparent lack of interest in her, always treating her as some sort of stranger they barely care for, all the while themselves laughing at the very name they chose for her. It was as if her entire existence was some big joke. The worst part being that she genuinely enjoys her name. This caused her a great deal of distress, and created a lot of issues with her self esteem. Despite her struggles she is a surprisingly upbeat person for someone in her circumstances.
She would then live off the streets of Iberton, the Isle where she lived, and one day as she was trying to outrun some others chasing her for food she had, she would run straight into another person, who remained completely unflinching. But turned to look down at her as she was knocked to the ground from the impact, dropping her scraps in the process as those chasing her made away with what she had. She would become visibly frustrated, and the man she ran into held out a hand to help her up and said he was just going to dispose of an old glaive he wasn't using anymore. After seeing what just happened, he gave the glaive to her and said to use it to keep herself safe.
Now armed with her glaive, she would set off to find somewhere, someplace, some people, that wouldn't be so unkind towards her, where they could be more like the man that gave her the glaive. During her travels she met someone else who at the time seemed about as lost as she was. Seeing an opportunity to make a real friend, Gilhene introduced herself, simply as Gilly. Despite the introduction, the individual Gilhene was trying to befriend backed off a bit, questioning how she wasn't frightened by his appearance. It was only then that she even noticed two large horns protruding from the person's head. With a smile, Gilhene simply said that didn't matter as long as they could be friends. The man introduced himself as Buckley and the two would spend hours talking to one another, bonding over their shared tumultuous upbringings and longing for something more out of life.
A kindness neither of them were quite used to, Gilhene and Buckley would become friends rather quickly. After some years travelling together, the two learned of the Arena and its upcoming Grand Ball Cup tournament and decided that it would be the best opportunity to make some money for themselves to find a place to stay that wasn't in the middle of nowhere. The two would make it to the bitter end of their group stage in the Season 3 tournament but would fall short at the finish line to get beyond the first round of the playoffs. The pair was undeterred though, as they found it fun just to be there and experiencing all this, now battling in the Arena and having people cheer them on. It was a great confidence booster for both of them as they struggled mightily with issues of negative self-esteem.
Not long after the tournament's conclusion, Buckley and Gilhene would be talking amongst themselves during team registration when a baseball would suddenly land beside them. Buckley would pick it up and it would smile at them, startling the two of them. "Greetings, my name is Ballkind. I couldn't help but notice you two appear to have a fair degree of potent-"
Ballkind was cut off as Buckley got too scared holding the talking ball. Throwing the ball instinctively as quickly as possible. Sending the baseball hurdling away, only to be instantly caught in the mitt of Mick. Who wasn't even looking in the direction Ballkind was coming from. Mick would then walk Ballkind back over to the two. "Let me try this again." He would say.
"I want you two to be part of my team, and I will become your new ma-" Once more Buckley could not help himself. Something about this creature unnerved him greatly and he could not help but reflexively attempt to get it away from himself. As Buckley charged at Ballkind in Mick's glove, the baseball would sigh and open its mouth just as the man with horns would end up charging right into it. Gilhene was shocked to see this small talking object consume a whole person. But before she knew it…
Gilhene found herself in some kind of void like space, floating in the middle of nowhere. In front of her was a large mirror, in the reflection, stood a man who looked very similar to her. Wielding the same weapon and everything. But this man looked unhappy. Just by looking at him she could tell. When suddenly, the man and Gilhene were both forced through the mirror, and as she turned around, she could see the image of the man in the mirror begin to fade away entirely. Before Gilhene could even process what was happening, she would open her eyes and find herself back where she was at the Arena. She couldn't remember a thing for a brief moment before it all came flooding back…
Both Buckley and Gilhene suddenly realized they were just meeting with their good old manager Ballkind! He's really great. He was informing them all about how they are going down the Season 4 Boss Gauntlet with Mick as a trio. How awesome it was for this kind manager to allow them to be on a team with such a prestigious former sports celebrity. Now the three are more ready than ever under the guidance of their manager Ballkind.
